Are you approaching weaning and feeling overwhelmed by all the conflicting information out there? Perhaps you’re worried about allergies, unsure about timings, or wondering how starting solids will affect your baby’s sleep? Whether you’re anxious about where to begin or just want to get it right, weaning is one of the most exciting transitions you’ll go through together and it doesn’t need to be complicated.
Weaning isn’t just about food, every mouthful contributes to their brain development, activates learning, builds key skills and can contribute to their long term health. Using my C.A.L.M approach, you’ll move at your baby’s pace, building their relationship with food from the very first taste, ensuring they become a proper little foodie by their toddler years.
The first six months of weaning lay the foundation for your child’s relationship with food for life. Getting it right isn’t about following a rigid pre written plan. It’s about understanding what your baby wants and needs at each stage, so you can help them explore food with curiosity rather than anxiety.
When your little one weans well, they’ll naturally move from milk to a varied diet, develop positive associations with textures and flavours, and avoid fussiness as they get older. This not only benefits their health but can benefit their sleep, brain development and even rectify pre existing health and nutritional issues. I firmly believe that done right weaning well is the one biggest thing you can do to help your baby holistically in the second 6 months of their life.
My C.A.L.M approach teaches you to become confident in your approach to food and cooking, meaning you can pass on this enthusiasm to your baby and learn their likes and dislikes – this is the true meaning of ‘baby led weaning’. I want you to feel calm introducing allergens, confident moving form puree to lumps and finger foods, and adapting meals to suit the whole family. With this advice weaning becomes something you all enjoy, and if you enjoy the process your baby will too.
My relationship with helping families with weaning started by rectifying issues which were born from poor weaning advice. Working as the principle nutritional therapist at the National Nutrition Clinic and running feeding drop in clinics for Sure Start Children’s Centres I was faced with food refusal, fussy eating and babies that only ate a handful of foods. Luckily with a combination of my sleeping, feeding and behaviour advice I could help these families. But I soon worked out that prevention was far better than cure.
Weaning advice often focuses simply on the types of foods, the difference between baby led and puree waning, the equipment you need and prescriptive advice that simply centres around first few weeks of eating. I knew this wasn’t enough to prevent the issues I was seeing with families. Weaning isn’t simply about getting baby to eat broccoli. For adequate weaning we need to look at timings, sleep, behaviour, your feelings and anxiety, confidence progressing with different allergens, textures and tastes. Learning your babies wants and needs, and progressing at their pace. Only when this is in place will a baby wean well onto solids, and your journey be truly ‘baby led’.
My approach brings all of that together. Drawing on my background as a paediatric nurse, nutritional therapist and weaning expert, I guide you month by month through every stage, from preparing before the first taste, right through to family meals and toddler years. We go at your baby’s pace. We troubleshoot together. And I make sure you’re never left wondering what to do next.
Weaning is one of those milestones that can feel loaded with pressure. Maybe you don’t have a great relationship with food, only eat ready meals of you might have started and hit a wall. Having a baby who refuses everything, or one who reacts to certain foods can be so stressful. Often parents come to me having received well-meaning advice that’s left them more confused than when they started. Or you might simply not know where to begin.
What I want you to know is this: the one thing that makes the biggest difference to your baby’s weaning journey is you feeling calm and confident. That’s not a throwaway reassurance. It’s backed by 25 years of experience. When you’re relaxed, your baby can be too. And that’s exactly what my approach is designed to give you.
With my background as a paediatric nurse, nutritional therapist, nanny and raising three children of my own, I have weaned over 25 babies but most importantly I LOVE food. I am passionate about growing, cooking (and eating!) and I want to pass that onto you. I bring a holistic understanding to weaning that goes well beyond first tastes. I’ve helped families navigate CMPA, reflux, fussy eating, sleep disruption from feeding changes, and everything in between.
I could tell you that my methods work and that families come out the other side feeling confident and excited about food. But I’d rather you hear it from parents just like you.
Whichever way you choose to work with me, you’ll follow my C.A.L.M Approach to Weaning, delivered in stages, month by month, that match exactly where your baby is.
