Introduction

With over half of new mums considering a career change rather than returning to their old jobs(1), employee retention being vital for businesses and employee wellbeing being high on the agenda, there isn’t a better time to invest in the new parents in your workplace.

Accountability and transparency in employee wellbeing are no longer ‘nice to have’, they’re must-haves. Leaders that invest in employee wellbeing are more likely to see increased productivity and performance while reducing staff turnover, burnout and stress. All in one go(2).

Employers that include good maternity support have a 54% better retention rate, and with £1.6 billion spent on replacement costs in the UK alone each year(3) this is vital for business. When returning back to work from maternity leave, I was in denial that I had postnatal depression/sleep deprivation. I was living on around 4-5hrs broken sleep a night. I was planning on giving up my job that I loved after working so hard to find it. I was pushed into going on the sick leave record, signed off for 12 weeks with exhaustion. It wouldn’t have been safe for me or my patients to continue as I was. While I focused on my mental health I knew 80% of it was down to sleep deprivation, as baby woken around every 1-2 hours a night due to reflux, not self settling, and feeding to sleep.

1 in 5 new parents suffer from mental health problems in the first year following the birth of their child, including postnatal depression and anxiety. Up to 90% of parents suffer from severe sleep deprivation. With the NHS maternity crisis at its all-time high, support for new parents hitting an all-time low, reports of ‘horrendous’ shortages in community services(4), which have prevented women from accessing adequate postnatal maternity care, it is time for UK employers to look at new parent wellbeing and place this higher up on the agenda for preventative employee wellbeing and mental health support.

It’s not just about sleep. Through my courses and online support options, your new parents can troubleshoot all parenting issues early on to ensure their return to work is smooth and stress free. I offer training and support in separation anxiety, choosing childcare, weaning, feeding, introducing a bottle, separating feeding and sleep, surviving illness and teething and, of course, sleep. All this advice prevents personal, baby and family issues from impacting on work; reducing absence, reducing stress, increasing productivity and ensuring safe practice at work.

It’s a bitter coincidence that a woman’s prime childbearing years coincide with some of the most pivotal years for her professionally, but there are things that companies and individuals can do, support they can access, tools and advice they can action to ensure parents can harness their new skills to benefit their careers and keep progressing while looking after their growing family.

I’m an Associate Ambulance Practitioner (AAP) working for South East Coast Ambulance NHS. I returned to work after approx 9 months maternity/annual leave. I was lucky enough to be recommended your free sleep workshop when my daughter was 7 months old. After seeing an improvement I purchased the full sleep course. We were breastfeeding to sleep for all naps and bedtime, multiple wakes through the night for feeding and resettling baby.

As ambulance crew I am responsible for both driving ambulances and treating patients. I was sleep deprived and very worried about returning to work, especially for the safety of both my patients and colleagues during long shifts throughout the day and night.

Hannah’s sleep course enabled me to return to work with a baby who was now sleeping from 8pm-7am, every night! I was also able to confidently leave my baby with my husband or parents and know that she would happily sleep without help from me.

Recent WHO(5) recommendations highlight the importance of managerial training on how and when to direct employees to support, and to recognise when they need it. Emphasis is on preventative, reactive and delivered at the right time, tailored to the individual, support. Too often, wellbeing strategies at work spring into action only once the person is already in crisis. I know from years of working with families what issues are likely to arise and at what point and I can advise on these stages before they become reality and it’s too late. My extensive experience of supporting new parents can be used to help your company lead the way on meeting the needs of new parents and therefore making sure ALL of your workforce performs.

There are some small, and often overlooked, changes that could be made by employers that would make a huge difference, and I can train your management teams on this online or in person.

I’ve been helping parents both on a 1:1 basis and through group programmes for nearly 3 decades, learning exactly what new families need, how to alleviate stress and exhaustion in new parenthood and how to navigate the emotions that go hand-in-hand with having a new baby. Although this level of support for new parents in the UK workforce is a pretty new concept, it is already being adopted in Europe, especially Germany.
